A few years ago we were contacted by a London based authoring agency about a problem their client had in Serbia concerning certain copyrights and other rights in a novel.
It is always exciting to practice law in such areas of the fine arts, especially as it is once a refresher in the ongoing business of a corporate law firm.
To me, art has always been an exotic discipline, and it probably has something to do with my zodiac sign, but that’s another topic.
Therefore, the Inquiry that was sent to us was related to Serbian law, that is, it was directed in one part to copyright and in the second part to a specific obligatory right of one client.
Overall, Mr. Blair who communicated with us was also a lawyer and he was an in-house attorney at the said Agency.
What first caught our attention was the very name of that author’s agency: Christopher Little Literary Agency in London, UK.
Exotic Inquiry and even more exotic Agency name.
After several usual documents that we have exchanged concerning the usual cooperation on the case, my colleague Blair revealed what the client was really about, who they represented as agents in the UK and worldwide and who, after all, needed to protect their rights in Serbia.
At issue was the famous writer J. K. Rowling the English writer best known as the author of a series of books on Harry Potter.
The excitement in the office was at its peak.
Of course, it was especially important for us to accept and get such a job, and we really enjoyed working on the subject, and we learned a lot from it.
All in all, that work was successfully completed, we have gained a very important and valuable reference and nothing is too important for the point of this story.
The point or the knowledge sometimes comes later, as when all the stars in the firmament above us are stacked.
So, time passed and after a few years, quite by accident, as it usually is, I came into possession of an interview given by J. K. Rowling to a magazine, the name of that magazine also doesn’t matter.
Namely, in that text, J.K. Rowling was explaining how she came to write her first Harry Potter novel, how she was in a difficult time in her life at the time, had just got divorced (?!) and on her way home – on the train, she began sketching and writing the front lines about her hero Harry Potter.
All in all, when she wrote a good part of the book, looking for a publisher for her novel, she flipped through newspapers and advertisements for London-based publishing agencies, and the name Christopher Little seemed very unusual to her, although it was a very small publishing agency.
So an unusual and exotic name, as J. K. Rowling put it: quite a fitting name for her Harry Potter novel.
Indeed, Christopher Little, quite an unusual name.
Well, one of the best-selling writers of the day, who is probably just behind Queen Elizabeth by wealth, brought a fabulous job to a not-so-famous and small authoring agency in London, thanks to that agency’s unusual name.
This story does not end there and it has another unexpected dimension that only life can create.
In 2011, J. K. Rowling announced that, after more than a decade, she was leaving the agency of Christopher Little in London and moving to a new agency founded by her lawyer – Mr. Blair.
Of course, it should not be inferred from this story that an unusual and imaginative name is a sufficient formula for success.
Again, one would say that the key factor is luck.
Yes, of course, luck is one factor.
However, you need to do everything you can to get into such a situation or a business opportunity.
In addition to an interesting name that will attract the attention of potential customers, of course the content of the service and the way you communicate your business name, the way you brand, recognize yourself, etc. are also important.
This is, of course, the subject of a profession other than legal, but all these elements, together with a quality and professional approach to business and a good business and legal strategy, will make your name and your business noticed and remembered by the right people.
Indeed, one surefire way to influence your business is to plan and create it.
